How often should I repaint my home exterior?

  • How often should I re-stain or paint my deck?

Stain: Typically every 1–3 years for transparent or semi-transparent systems depending on exposure. Solid stains and paints can last longer but may require more prep when refinishing. Weather, foot traffic, and maintenance influence intervals.

  • Can you refinish a deck that has had multiple previous stains/paints?

Yes. We assess the current condition and may recommend stripping, sanding, or full replacement of damaged boards before applying a new system.

  • Is it better to use oil-based or water-based stains?

Both have benefits. Oil-based penetrating stains often soak deeper but take longer to dry and have stronger odors. Modern water-based stains dry quickly, have lower odor, and often contain UV inhibitors. Product selection depends on wood type and desired look.

  • Will painting or staining my deck make it slip-resistant?

Paints and stains can include slip-resistant additives to increase traction. We recommend these for pool frequently wet areas.
